SALINA — Defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) Thursday told 114 employees at its Salina plant and 25 workers at its Owego facility that they will lose their jobs.
The 139 area layoffs are part of 367 total jobs Lockheed is eliminating in its Mission Systems and Training business in the U.S., according to Keith D. Little, senior manager of media relations and public affairs at Lockheed Martin. Most of the employees will be let go on Aug. 15.
“This reduction is necessary to address current business realities, including uncertain program funding, a delay in contract awards and an extremely competitive market,” Little said in an email to The Business Journal. “These realities require us to continue our focus on tightly controlling costs to remain as affordable as possible.”

Lockheed first announced on July 15 that it would be cutting about 300 jobs companywide in the Mission Systems and Training unit. At the time, the security and aerospace company didn’t say how many jobs would be eliminated at its Central New York facilities or when the cuts would take place.
Lockheed Martin currently employs 1,900 at its plant in Salina and 2,700 at its Owego facility.
Lockheed’s Mission Systems and Training business provides systems engineering, software development, complex program management, supply-chain solutions and logistics, and training and simulation technologies for global security, civil, and commercial markets, according to its website.
The job cuts primarily affect employees in engineering and program management, as well as other disciplines across the enterprise, Little said.
Mission Systems and Training employs more than 18,000 people in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Australia. Computer systems, software, and hardware engineering professionals make up the biggest segment of its workforce, followed by production, professional, and other support specialists, according to the company website.
Lockheed Martin employs almost 120,000 people companywide. It generated $47 billion in revenue last year.
