Defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) on Wednesday announced plans to lay off 80 employees from its site in Salina and 65 employees from its location in Owego.
The layoffs are part of 587 cuts nationwide. Most of the affected employees will leave the company on Nov. 20, Keith D. Little, senior manager of media relations and public affairs at Lockheed Martin, said in an email message to CNYBJ.com.
The layoffs at the Salina plant will reduce the employee count to about 1,600, according to Little. The cuts in Owego will lower the employee total at that site to more than 2,500, he added.
Lockheed Martin on Oct. 16 announced it had plans to cut about 600 jobs in its Mission Systems and Training business in the U.S. At the time, the company didn’t say how many jobs would be eliminated in Central New York.
“This action, which was announced on October 16 … is necessary to address continuing challenges in our business environment, including continued uncertain program funding, delays in contract awards and an extremely competitive market,” Little said in today’s email.
The recent shutdown of the federal government had an impact on Lockheed Martin, but these layoffs are independent from that event, Little said in an email message following the announcement on Oct. 16.
Today’s announcement also comes more than three months after Lockheed cut 367 jobs in the Mission Systems and Training unit, including 114 employees at its Salina plant and 25 workers at its Owego facility.
Lockheed’s Mission Systems and Training business provides systems engineering, software development, complex program management, supply-chain solutions and logistics, and training and simulation technologies for global security, civil, and commercial markets, according to its website.
The unit employs about 17,000 people in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Australia. Computer systems, software, and hardware engineering professionals make up the biggest segment of its workforce, followed by production, professional, and other support specialists, according to the site.
Lockheed Martin employs almost 120,000 people companywide. It generated $47 billion in revenue last year.
