OSWEGO — The Novelis plant in Oswego has a new manager.

Chris Smith, a 28-year veteran of Novelis, was most recently global director for automotive products at the company’s headquarters in Atlanta. He was at the Oswego plant from 2006 to 2010 as manager of product quality and development and as hot mill manufacturing manager.

Novelis is a producer of rolled aluminum.

The Oswego facility is in the midst of a $200 million expansion started to meet rising demand for aluminum from car makers. The project includes a 192,000-square-foot addition to the 1.3-million-square-foot plant.

“Chris’ experience will be a tremendous asset as we conclude this major capital expansion project and bring our new automotive capacity online,” Tom Walpole, senior vice president of Novelis and president of Novelis North America, said in a news release. “This is an exciting time for the Oswego plant and I know Chris will be a great leader for our team.”

Smith succeeds Luc Boivin, who is retiring after nearly 30 years with Novelis.
