SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Onondaga County is offering eligible county employees a one-time payment of $10,000 to voluntarily leave the county’s workforce by Dec. 31.
Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney has announced the “voluntary” retirement incentive “in advance” of county lawmakers’ work on the 2017 budget, Onondaga County said in a news release issued Thursday.
To be eligible for this incentive, the employees must be “vested” members in the public-employment retirement system that New York State sponsors and eligible “under those rules” to receive retirement benefits.
Mahoney’s office has submitted the proposal to the Onondaga County Legislature. The legislature’s Ways & Means committee will consider it during a meeting scheduled for Monday.
If county legislators adopt the program during their meeting on Sept. 6, the employees can choose to participate by filing a form with the county’s personnel department “no later than the close of business” on Oct. 21, according to the release.
Representatives from the New York State Comptroller’s Office will be available for county employees to answer any questions, Onondaga County said.
