Mello Velo Café opens at relocated bicycle shop

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse has a new biker bar, of sorts.

Mello Velo Café, has opened inside Mello Velo bicycle shop. A fixture on Westcott Street for years, earlier this month Mello Velo moved to new, renovated quarters at 790 Canal St.

The café has a complete state liquor license explains Sara Morris, who owns Mello Velo along with her husband Steven, but not all the liquor has arrived yet. The coffee, tea, food and beer are in place, she reports, though with a slightly limited menu.

Some offerings have a bicycle-related theme, including a smoothie called “Chainbreaker,” another called “Wheelie Healthy,” and a Belgian ale called “Fat Tire.”

The 1,000-square-foot café has views to the bike shop and an outdoor seating area that doubles the café’s seating to nearly 100.

The Morris couple completed much of the renovation work on the building, a former rag warehouse. It took three years to get it ready, they report.

The café is open until 9 p.m. daily, except 5 p.m. on Sunday’s, Sara Morris says.
