More affordable housing announced for Utica

UTICA, N.Y. — More housing is coming to Utica.

On the heels of the groundbreaking at Artspace Utica Lofts, Mayor Robert M. Palmieri and Gillian Conde, VP of Rochester-based DePaul Properties, announced the development of a new 66-unit affordable-housing project on the city’s west side.

“Housing continues to be one of our most pressing needs in the city of Utica, and this is one more step to help provide safe, healthy homes for as many of our residents,” Palmieri said in a news release announcing the project.

Located along the north side of Whitesboro Street between DeWitt and Saratoga streets, the units include studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments and will be split between two separate structures. Each will include a townhouse-style façade to better fit into the look of the surrounding neighborhood.

Once complete, the new units will be available to rent by those who earn 60 percent of the area’s median income, making the units eligible for individuals making up to $35,820 and a family of four earning up to $51,120.

“As a native of Utica, I am thrilled to be able to announce the development of DePaul’s second project in my hometown,” Conde said. “This project will invest roughly $18 million into the Columbia Square neighborhood. Its proximity to the new Wynn Hospital, downtown, and the many businesses along Oriskany Boulevard makes these units ideal for the many employees who work in those areas.”

DePaul’s first project in the city was the Start Line Apartments on Dwyer Avenue. The company also operates the DeWitt Clinton Apartments in Rome.
