Symposium details
The symposium started with welcoming remarks from NUAIR CEO Mike Hertzendorf and Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr.
U.S. Representatives Anthony Brindisi (D–Utica) and John Katko (R–Camillus) had a moderated conversation on the “ever-growing” drone industry and the “significant” investment and support that New York has contributed to Central New York.
Houston Mills, V.P. of flight operations & safety at Atlanta, Georgia–based UPS, provided a keynote address on Tuesday morning, explaining how UPS is currently using drones in their daily operations and what’s in store for the future of drone package delivery by UPS.
Attendees also watched three videos that demonstrated the technologies and capabilities of New York’s 50-Mile UAS test corridor that’s under development between Rome and Syracuse.
One of the videos featured multiple UAS Service Suppliers (USS) communicating with each other for safe flights and how public-safety personnel can implement a “no fly zone” of airspace in the case of an emergency where a public-safety drone is deployed.
The Symposium’s final day focused on the industries involved with unmanned aircraft systems. It included representatives from across the U.S. in the fields such as higher education and public safety, along with technology startups discussing their involvement with the UAS industry.
The day was opened by Robert Simpson, president & CEO of CenterState CEO, provide opening remarks followed by keynote speaker Jamie Winders, director of the Syracuse University Autonomous Systems Policy Institute.
The day included three plenary panels, a “lunch & learn” session, and time to visit UAS vendor tables and network with industry experts.
