ONONDAGA, N.Y. — The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department says it’s investigating a Thursday morning fire inside a barn at Beak & Skiff Apple Orchard at 2707 Route 80 in the town of Onondaga.

The flames were reported just after 7 a.m. when a grounds keeper arriving for work discovered the fire and called 911, the department said in a news release.

When firefighters showed up, they saw smoke and flames coming from the first-floor and second-floor windows of an apple barn.

It took firefighters about one hour to extinguish the fire, which caused “heavy damage” to the barn. Firefighters used portable water tanks to bring water to the scene due to the lack of fire hydrants in the rural area.

No injuries were reported. Evidence technicians along with Onondaga County fire investigators continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
