Motorcycle shop owner sentenced to three to six years for failing to pay state taxes

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The owner of a motorcycle repair shop on Syracuse’s North Side has been sentenced to three to six years in jail for failing to pay state sales taxes.

Robert Woodward, 45, of 4510 Quamby Rd., Clay, N.Y., pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and third-degree criminal tax fraud, both felonies. He was sentenced on Feb. 8 in Onondaga County Court.

Woodward was the owner of Rob’s Cycle Supply Inc., at 613 Wolf St. in Syracuse. He was charged with collecting $37,323 in sales tax from customers between March 2012 and August 2013 and then not paying the state, as required by law.

Woodward also tried to pay several tax assessments, including the sales tax owed, with a forged check, according to a news release from the state Department of Taxation and Finance. However, Woodward has made a partial payment for his combined tax liabilities, since his guilty plea, the department said.
