UTICA, N.Y. — Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) is launching MV Tech Corps, a free program for eligible students involving “short-term” training and a college credential to prepare them for “regionally in-demand” tech and trade careers.

MV Tech Corps is funded through the Oneida County Local Development Corporation, MVCC said.

The program will provide students career technical training, along with personal and employment counseling. Students can choose from MVCC’s mechatronics, carpentry/masonry, CNC machinist technology, and welding-certificate programs — each taking eight months to complete.

Those who complete the program and hold a high-school diploma or its equivalent will earn the associated certificate from the college and also “will be guaranteed” a job interview with Cree/Wolfspeed in Marcy and Briggs and Stratton in Sherrill, the college said.

To be eligible, a student must be ages 17-24, a current resident of Oneida County, and a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or citizen of a U.S. territory, MVCC said.

“Training the next generation of workforce to support our employers is incredibly important and MV Tech Corps is a great solution to getting Oneida County residents trained in skilled labor positions that are available at growing companies like Briggs and Stratton and Cree/Wolfspeed,” David Grow, chairman of the Oneida County Local Development Corporation, said.
