UTICA, N.Y. — Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) has launched a new four-year obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) residency program with approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The program will initially accept 16 residents total — four residents per year, with the first four residents set to begin July 1.

The program helps bring board-certified specialty expertise for high-risk pregnancy, infertility, cancer in women, and urogynecology, which formerly had limited local access.

“Our new OB/GYN residency training program will have a tremendous positive effect on the Mohawk Valley region,” Dr. Mark Martens, program director, said in a news release announcing the program. “This academic program, along with our well-rounded OB/GYN team, ensures that we will continue to deliver babies with the highest level of care and commitment in our area.”

In addition to the new program, the number of physicians specializing in women’s health at MVHS will double from eight to 16 within four years, providing more access in the region and preventing the need to leave the area for timely and needed care, the organization said.

MVHS serves Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison counties as an integrated-health system with more than 4,000 employees and 17 primary-care locations. MVHS will open the new Wynn Hospital this October.
