MVHS to transition all laboratory services to MVHS-operated labs

UTICA, N.Y. — The Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) plans to transition all laboratory services at the Faxton and St. Luke’s campuses to MVHS-operated labs as of Dec. 9.

Since 2009, laboratory services at the Faxton and St. Luke’s Campuses had been provided through a services agreement with Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp), MVHS said in a Wednesday news release. LabCorp (NYSE: LH) is headquartered in Burlington, North Carolina.

MVHS already manages the St. Elizabeth campus laboratory, the health system said.

“The transition comes from our pursuit to improve quality and patient satisfaction through increased efficiency,” Shannon Mathewson, VP of operations at MVHS, said in the release. “It allows us to provide a faster turnaround for patients’ lab results.”

Moving all lab services to MVHS will also keep 250 laboratory jobs “local,” MVHS said. Those interested in applying for one of the open positions can visit careers.mvhealthsystem.org.

MVHS provides training for many positions, the organization noted.

The health-care system says it is spending more than $3 million in new equipment that will bring “advanced” laboratory testing to the region. MVHS Laboratory Services partners with the Rochester, Minnesota–based Mayo Clinic to provide “quick turnarounds” on lab results.
