National Grid is alerting customers of a scam notice stating that the federal government will pay their utility bills. No such program exists and anyone solicited with such an offer should notify local law enforcement.

Customers have received a variety of solicitations including phone calls, in-person, and online requests for their Social Security numbers and bank routing numbers. Customers are then given fake account numbers to pay their bills. These are fraudulent numbers not accepted by National Grid to pay customer bills.

National Grid employees are required to carry a company-issued photo identification, and most, but not all, National Grid employees travel in clearly marked National Grid vehicles.

Customers should always ask to see identification when anyone says they are from National Grid. Customers can also call 1-800-642-4272 to verify an employee.

National Grid (LSE: NG; NYSE: NGG) provides electric and gas service to more than 7 million customers in the Northeast, including 3.3 million electric customers and 3.4 million natural gas customers. National Grid (www.nationalgridus.com) also manages the electricity network on Long Island under an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority.
