New York corn production forecast to slip slightly this year

Corn field

New York farms are expected to produce 94.05 million bushels of corn for grain in 2024, down 1.4 percent from 95.4 million bushels last year. That’s according to a USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) crop-production forecast based on Aug. 1 field conditions.

The total yield per acre in the Empire State is estimated to average 165 bushels this year, up 6 bushels per acre, or nearly 4 percent, from 159 bushels in 2023, the USDA NASS said. Area harvested for grain corn is forecast at 570,000 acres in 2024, down 5 percent from 600,000 acres a year ago.

U.S. corn production is estimated to fall 1.3 percent to nearly 15.15 billion bushels this year from 15.34 billion bushels in 2023, the USDA reported.
