That’s according to a housing-market report that the New York State Association of Realtors (NYSAR) released Wednesday.
The number of homes for sale stood at 71,704, a decrease of 10.3 percent compared to August 2016, according to NYSAR’s data.
The year-to-date (Jan. 1 through Aug. 31) sales total of 86,050 was 2.5 percent above the same period last year.
The statewide median sales price of $270,000 in August was up 6.9 percent compared to last August.
Pending sales during August rose 6 percent from a year ago to reach 13,672.
The months’ supply of homes for sale dropped 12.5 percent at the end of August to 6.3 months supply.
It stood at 7.2 months at the end of August 2016. NYSAR considers a 6 month to 6.5 month supply a balanced market.
Central New York data
Realtors in Broome County sold 169 existing homes in August, up 7 percent from 158 a year ago, according to the NYSAR report. The median sales price decreased about 5 percent to more than $107,000 from over $113,000 a year ago.
In Jefferson County, realtors closed on 138 homes in August, up 13 percent from 122 a year ago, and the median sales price decreased 11 percent to more than $136,000 from more than $153,000 in August 2016, according to the NYSAR data.
NYSAR also reports that realtors sold 216 homes in Oneida County last month, down about 6 percent compared to the 231 sold during August 2016. The median sales price fell about 2 percent to $127,000 from nearly $130,000 a year ago.
Realtors in Onondaga County sold 592 previously owned homes in August, a sales decrease of nearly 3 percent compared to the August 2016 total of 609. The median sales price rose 0.7 percent to $146,000 from $145,000 a year ago, according to the NYSAR report.
All home-sales data is compiled from multiple-listing services in New York state and it includes townhomes and condominiums in addition to existing single-family homes, according to NYSAR.
