The number of people filing initial applications for unemployment benefits in New York state fell 8 percent to 19,996 in the week ending Dec. 27, from 21,797 the week before.
Fewer layoffs in the construction, health care and social assistance, and retail trade industries led the decline, according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release issued today.
The number of people continuing to receive unemployment-insurance benefits in New York also declined to 184,967 from 186,813 in the prior week, according to the Labor Department data.
