New York milk production rises 3.5 percent in December

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York dairy farms produced 1.2 billion pounds of milk in December 2015, up 3.5 percent from the year-ago period, the USDA’s New York field office reported.

Production per cow averaged 1,940 pounds in December, up 50 pounds from a year prior.

The number of milk cows on farms in New York state totaled 620,000 head in December, up 5,000 head from December 2014, but unchanged from November 2015, the field office reported.

New York dairy farmers received $20 per hundredweight of milk in November, up 80 cents from October, but down $3.80 from November 2014, according to the field office.
