New York milk production rises nearly 5 percent in May

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York dairy farms produced 1.29 billion pounds of milk in May, up 4.9 percent from the year-ago period, the USDA’s New York field office reported.

Production per cow averaged 2,080 pounds in May, up 90 pounds from a year prior.

The number of milk cows on farms in New York state totaled 620,000 head in May, up 2,000 head from May 2015, but unchanged from April 2016, the field office reported.

New York dairy farmers received $16.10 per hundredweight of milk this April, down 10 cents from March and off $1.40 from April 2015, according to the field office.
