New York posts second-largest rise in jobless claims in latest week

New York reported the second-biggest increase in jobless claims of all 50 states in the latest week, according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release issued Thursday.

The number of people applying for new unemployment-insurance benefits in the Empire State rose by 38 percent to 23,346 in the week ending July 4, from 16,858 a week earlier.

Layoffs in New York’s transportation and warehousing, educational service, and health care and social assistance industries led the increase, according to the Labor Department.
