ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New York State on Monday reported 2,538 new coronavirus infections in the last day, a 0.8 percent increase in the state’s total, marking the lowest percentage daily increase in virus cases since the COVID-19 crisis started.

It’s also the smallest total increase in infections in the state since March 18.

Appearing in Rochester, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday also reported the state had 226 new COVID-19 deaths in the last day. That is down from 280 a day earlier and 299 two days ago. It was the lowest number of daily deaths from the disease since March 27.

New York also continues to see improvements in its hospital statistics for this virus.

The net change in total hospitalizations was negative for a 21st consecutive day, which means more people leaving a hospital than entering one. The state now has just over half as many people in the hospital now (9,647) with this deadly disease than it did at its peak (18,825) on April 12. The net change in intubations, or people going on a ventilator, was negative for a 22nd day.

The state is up to nearly 319,000 total COVID-19 infections and more than 19,400 deaths.
