New York’s initial jobless claims fall 10 percent

The number of people applying for new unemployment-insurance benefits in New York state in the week ending Feb. 8 declined by 2,721, or more than 10 percent, to 23,610.

Fewer layoffs in the state’s construction, manufacturing, and retail trade industries led the drop, according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release issued Thursday.

The number of New Yorkers continuing to receive unemployment benefits also fell in the week ending Feb. 8 to 260,189 from 263,254 the week before.
