The number of people applying for new unemployment-insurance benefits in New York state in the week ending Dec. 28 fell by 1,210, or nearly 5 percent, to 23,782 from the week before.
Fewer layoffs in New York’s construction, health care and social assistance, and professional, scientific, and technical services industries led the decline, according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release issued today.
The Empire State’s decline in jobless claims came just one week after its claims had jumped by 3,284, or 15 percent.

The number of New Yorkers continuing to receive unemployment benefits inched up in the week ending Dec. 28 to 226,201 from 226,040 the week before.
The state data is not seasonally adjusted.
