The number of people filing initial applications for unemployment benefits in New York state increased more than 4 percent to 18,969 in the week ending Sept. 13, from 18,159 the week before.
The slight rise in initial jobless claims comes one week after claims had plummeted 13 percent in the state, according to data the U.S. Department of Labor issued Thursday.
The number of people continuing to receive unemployment-insurance benefits in New York fell in the most-recent week to 173,595, from 185,076 in the prior week, according to the Labor Department data. It’s the second weekly decrease in a row for that measure.
