ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State on Friday reported 1,830 new cases of COVID-19 in the last day, the highest daily total since the middle of May.
COVID infections have been gradually rising in the Empire State since late June, when cases bottomed out at under 300 per day. However, New York’s increases, coming amid the spread of the delta variant, have not been as sharp as other states with lower vaccination rates. And thus far, the rise in COVID cases has not translated into a matching increase in hospitalizations and deaths.
New York currently has just under 500 people hospitalized with the illness, up from less than 350 in early July. The state reported just one death in the last day and the 7-day average is three deaths per day.
