VESTAL, N.Y. — Binghamton University–led Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine has won millions in federal funding in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s regional “Innovation Engines” (NSF Engines) competition.
The Binghamton–led project was one of only 10 projects across the country selected for the award, the office of U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) announced on Monday.
It will bring $15 million in federal funding immediately, with up to $160 million total over the life of the program, from the NSF to spur growth and research in battery development and manufacturing in upstate New York over the next decade.
NSF Engines was created by the majority leader’s CHIPS & Science Law, his office noted.
“Up to $160 million is now on its way to supercharge Upstate NY as a booming battery research hub being led by Binghamton University,” Schumer said in a news release. “Thanks to my CHIPS & Science Law, Binghamton will be the beating electric heart of federal efforts to help bring battery innovation and development back from overseas to spark growth of this critical industry vital to our nation’s national and economic security. With the prestigious NSF Engines award, the Southern Tier and Upstate NY has officially secured its place as the next loop on America’s battery belt.”
Schumer made the announcement during a Monday appearance at Binghamton University.
Binghamton University’s NSF Regional Engines proposal will capitalize on efforts already underway and “synergize” existing resources to launch new initiatives focused on strengthening the battery supply chain, accelerating the transfer of battery technologies from lab to market, and mobilizing resources around research and development to complement battery–manufacturing initiatives and growing cross-sector partnerships per the release.
“Establishing a battery and energy storage Engine here in upstate New York is a crucial step to bringing domestic production of batteries and a secure supply chain to the U.S.,”M. Stanley Whittingham, Engine chief innovation officer, Binghamton University professor, and Nobel Laureate recipient, said. “It is critically important that battery innovations stemming from university and industry researchers can be developed, prototyped and manufactured in the U.S. in order to leap frog today’s Asian technology. With Senator Schumer’s continued support, we are confident we can transform our region, attract investment, create new jobs and fill those jobs with a skilled workforce.”
Schumer’s office noted that the Monday funding award follows the more than $113 million announced in 2022 for Binghamton to establish its battery manufacturing and innovation hub. He also secured the federal Tech Hub designation for the Southern Tier late last year.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Guthrie Clinic on Thursday announced a major nurse–recruitment campaign for Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital (Lourdes Hospital) in Binghamton.
As of Jan. 24 — and for a period of 90 days — Guthrie is offering a $50,000 sign-on bonus to new, “but experienced,” full-time direct care registered nurses (RN) for Lourdes Hospital in “select, high-need areas.”
Guthrie says it learned during the pandemic that “market-competitive compensation strategies are key” to maintaining adequate staffing with permanent, full-time nurses in favor of travelling agency staff.
“At Guthrie, we recognize the importance of providing high-quality care to our patients in the Binghamton market and we understand the necessity of strengthening the Lourdes nursing team with permanent Lourdes nurses,” Debra Raupers, EVP, chief nurse executive at the Guthrie Clinic, said in the announcement. “This initiative not only reflects our commitment to our patients, but also our commitment to being the best place to work and build a career.”
Along with the $50,000 sign-on bonus for targeted Lourdes RN positions, Guthrie will continue to offer up to a $25,000 sign-on bonus for other experienced RNs in other areas.
Additionally, Guthrie is doubling — to $20,000 from $10,000 — the referral bonus for caregivers who refer nurses to Lourdes in the identified areas. Guthrie sees that move as a “thank you for helping to grow the team at Lourdes.”
The Guthrie Clinic in June 2023 entered into an agreement to acquire Lourdes Hospital, its locations, and related physician practices.
Sayre, Pennsylvania–based Guthrie reached the agreement with St. Louis, Missouri–based Ascension, per Guthrie’s announcement. Lourdes Hospital is located at 169 Riverside Drive in Binghamton.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — More than 800 workers involved in building the new stadium for the Buffalo Bills have started putting up structural steel for the new venue.
Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday joined Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, and other local officials to announce this phase of the construction work, which Hochul’s office described as a “significant milestone.”
The new 60,000-seat facility is ready for the more visible large-scale structural steel work, Hochul’s office said. The first steel beam hoisted into place will signify theprogress taking place at the site of the new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.
The Buffalo Bills designed the new stadium in conjunction with Legends Project Development and the architectural firm Populous.
“This major construction milestone is a testament to the union labor and local workers who have made this project possible,” Hochul contended in a news release. “By creating thousands of jobs, this stadium has already proven to be an engine for regional economic development. I am proud of all that has been accomplished and am excited to witness future progress as we move closer to opening day in 2026.”
Friday’s announcement marks the completion of excavation works seven months after breaking ground in June 2023. Trucks removed more than 500,000 cubic yards of stone and dirt in the effort. Laborers built a sheet–piling wall and poured over 18,000 cubic yards of concrete to create the foundation. Hochul’s office said.
The stadium marks one of the largest economic–development project in Western New York history with an estimated annual economic impact of $385 million and the creation of 10,000 union construction jobs, in accordance with a project labor agreement (PLA) agreed to by the Buffalo Building Trades Council.
“As workers hoist into place the first structural steel at the new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, we want to recognize the many dedicated workers who have safely played an instrumental role in the initial phases of the project and those who will work on the project moving forward as we look ahead to our first game in the new stadium in 2026,”Josh Dziurlikowski, interim COO/SVP of finance & business administration for the Buffalo Bills, said in the release. “Today’s recognition of our indispensable workforce is another reminder of the hard work of many building a stadium that will be a great source of pride for Bills fans everywhere.”

MAINE, N.Y. — Work is under way at the Greater Binghamton Airport to transform it into a modern facility that will enhance the passenger experience, Gov. Kathy Hochulannounced.
Construction began on the airport’s terminal building to demolish an existing restaurant, kitchen, and interior hallway to allow for the construction of temporary waiting areas, new restrooms, and a walkway to a jet bridge. Work on a new outdoor canopy and entrance portals will begin this spring.
The project, which received $32 million from the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, will renovate the passenger terminal and redevelop the airport’s main approach road to improve passenger flow and better accommodate the needs of passengers. Work will also include relocating the general aviation terminal to the main passenger terminal.
“With the start of major construction, we have taken a big step toward providing Southern Tier travelers with a state-of-the-art airport that will make their journeys more pleasurable and also serve as an economic engine for the entire region,” Hochul contended in a news release. “The improvements we are making to the Greater Binghamton Airport are part of our ongoing efforts to revitalize airports across upstate New York and create world-class travel experiences that will encourage people and businesses to visit, live, and work in the Empire State.”
Built in 1945, the Greater Binghamton Airport, located in the town of Maine, handlesmore than 13,000 enplanements annually and is serviced by commercial carriers including Delta and Avelo.
The $47.8 million modernization project, expected to create more than 500 jobs and be completed by the winter of 2025, includes construction of a new canopy and entry portals, reconfiguration of the ticketing lobby and outbound baggage area, renovation of the departures lobby and lounge, relocation of rental car counters, renovation of the baggage–claim area, a new parking revenue-control system, and construction of a new Customs and Border Protection facility.
The project also received $7 million in federal funding through the Infrastructre Investments and Jobs Act Airport Terminal Program.
“The Greater Binghamton Airport is receiving a once-in-a-generation transformational renovation, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without Gov. Hochul’s support.” Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said. “I’d also like to thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, along with Congressman Molinaro for their support. A large majority of this important project is paid for by state and federal grants, allowing us to upgrade and modernize our airport for the 21st century while keeping our local expenses low.”
The Greater Binghamton Airport was one of nine airports sharing $230 million in awards for revitalization projects. The other airports are Albany International Airport, Watertown International Airport, Saratoga County Airport, Syracuse Hancock International Airport, Sullivan County International Airport. Ogdensburg International Airport, Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, and Adirondack Regional Airport.
