North Country communities to receive an extra $1 million from NYPA

MASSENA, N.Y. — The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is making an extra payment of more than $1 million to eight local governments and school districts in the North Country.

NYPA will pay $1.06 million that will be split by St. Lawrence County, the towns of Massena, Louisville and Waddington, the villages of Massena and Waddington, as well as the Massena and Madrid-Waddington school districts.

The money goes to the government bodies based on a formula that is part of the 2003 St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project Relicensing Agreement. The $1 million-plus is in addition to the $2 million payment made each year to the same communities, NYPA explained in a news release.

The additional payment is tied to a provision in the relicensing agreement that triggers payouts to local communites in years when power generation is exceptionally high at the project, which is owned and operated by NYPA.

“The Power Authority is pleased to be able to make this payment to the St. Lawrence County communities that generously host our St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project,” Gil C. Quiniones, NYPA president and CEO, said in the release.

NYPA operates 16 generating facilities across New York and 1,400 circuit-miles of transmission lines. The authority said more than 70 percent of the power it produces comes from hydropower.
