CANTON, N.Y. — The former treasurer of the Morley Volunteer Fire Co. was ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution and sentenced to five years of probation for stealing from the fire company, New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced.
Cindi Perkins, 58, previously pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny in November 2023. She was sentenced in St. Lawrence County Court by Judge Gregory P. Storie, according to a Thursday news release from the comptroller’s office.
While serving as treasurer for Morley Volunteer Fire Co. from 2016-2019, investigators found Perkins made unauthorized cash withdrawals at ATMs in the Del Lago Resort and Casino in Tyre and Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona. Perkins also wrote checks to herself from the fire company’s account and kept money, including some from fundraisers, instead of depositing the funds, the comptroller’s office stated.
Investigators were able to match Perkins’ deposits into her personal accounts with similar cash amounts that were paid to the fire company. She used the money to pay for groceries and other personal expenses, per DiNapoli’s office.
“Ms. Perkins diverted money meant to protect her community to line her own pockets,” DiNapoli contended in the release. “Thanks to my partnership with District Attorney Greg Pasqua and the state police, she has now been held accountable and restitution ordered.”
