Six projects in the North Country will benefit from $2.2 million in federal grant funding that the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) has announced.
The NBRC’s economic & infrastructure development investment program awarded the funding, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and U.S. Senator Kristen Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) said in a news release issued Wednesday.
The funding targets infrastructure projects and other initiatives in St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Clinton, Oswego, and Madison counties.

The projects include the installation of water main, sewer mains, and storm sewer lines at the site of the former Nestle facility in Fulton. The NBRC awarded $250,000 for the project, the office of U.S. Representative John Katko (R–Camillus) announced last Friday.
Other projects
The Town of Nelson in Madison County will use a grant of $200,000 to build a 16,500-foot extension of the public water main and pump station, and to build a storage tank to service a water district east of the Village of Cazenovia.
St. Lawrence County will allocate a grant of $500,000 to redevelop and “re-establish safe access” to rail infrastructure at the former Jones & Laughlin (J&L) Steel site in the town of Clifton.
The Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency will utilize a $500,000 award to construct more than 12,000 linear feet of natural gas line; more than 15,000 linear feet of electric service; 3,400 linear feet of water main; 1,800 linear feet of wastewater lines; and nearly 5,000 linear feet of a road to establish a new business park adjacent to the Watertown International Airport.
The Ogdensburg Growth Fund Development Corporation in St. Lawrence County will allocate $250,000 to cover subordinate loans to businesses that are creating new jobs in the community, with “emphasis” on business development within Ogdensburg’s state-designated, brownfield-opportunity area.
The Town of Plattsburgh in Clinton County will use a grant of $500,000 to install two 12-inch water-production wells and a new treatment building for chlorination and fluoridation.
About the NBRC
The NBRC is a federal-state partnership focused on the economic revitalization of communities across the Northern Border region, which includes northern Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York.
The northern border region of New York includes the counties of Cayuga, Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Herkimer, Fulton, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Oswego, St. Lawrence, and Seneca.
The Commission includes the governors of the four northern-border states and a federal co-chair. It provides financial and technical assistance to communities in the region to “support” entrepreneurs, improve water, broadband, and transportation infrastructure, and “promote” other initiatives to improve the region’s economy.
In the last seven years, NBRC has awarded funding to projects at 153 public and nonprofit recipients totaling over $30 million.
