NYPA funds efficiency project at Upstate Medical University

SYRACUSE — Renovations at The State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University’s Weiskotten Hall were among a dozen energy-efficiency projects the New York Power Authority (NYPA) highlighted Friday.

A $600,000 project last year at Weiskotten Hall upgraded the building’s ventilation and lighting. Workers also added energy-efficient motors and an energy-efficient chiller. NYPA estimated annual energy savings from the work will total $36,000.

The project at the medical university was one of 12 around the state detailed by the NYPA.

“The energy-efficiency improvements that the New York Power Authority undertook in 2011 under Gov. [Andrew] Cuomo’s leadership involved a wide array of advanced energy technologies to lower utility bills at public facilities and reduce global-warming greenhouse-gas emissions by lessening electricity demand,” NYPA President and CEO Gil Quiniones said in a news release.

NYPA provided $186 million for projects at almost 2,600 public facilities across New York in 2011. The authority finances its energy-services program largely by selling commercial paper notes and with a $21 million renewable-energy program established in 2008.

It recovers financing costs by sharing electric-bill savings. The authority expects its 2011 projects to lower peak electricity use by more than 10 megawatts.
