NYSEG awards Upstate Shredding economic-development grant

OWEGO, N.Y. — New York State Electric & Gas Corp. (NYSEG) has awarded a grant of more than $68,000 to Upstate Shredding, LLC and sister company Weitsman Recycling following the expansion of the scrap-metal processing facility in Owego.

The grant represents the second installment of funding that totals more than $133,000 for electricity-infrastructure upgrades, Upstate Shredding said in a news release.

Carl Taylor, VP of customer service at Iberdrola USA, NYSEG’s parent company, presented the check to Adam Weitsman, CEO of Upstate Shredding and Weitsman Recycling.

“We are very thankful to NYSEG for their continued commitment to our growth as we continue to supply jobs and opportunity here in the Southern Tier and beyond. We are currently working on additional projects and look forward to bringing them to fruition later this year,” Weitsman said in the release.

Upstate Shredding earlier this year installed a new, $1.7 million motor on its mega shredder. The motor was part of a $3 million project that enabled the company to add jobs, increase production by 30 percent, and grow annual sales by $10 million.

The company didn’t indicate the number of jobs it added in the project in its news release.

Upstate Shredding and Weitsman Recycling describes itself as “the East Coast’s largest privately held scrap-metal processor.” It operates 19 locations throughout New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada.

Upstate Shredding and Weitsman Recycling will process more than 1 million tons of ferrous and 250 million pounds of non-ferrous metal in 2015.
