The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has named David Margalit as the authority’s chief operating officer.

NYSERDA announced the appointment after members of its board of directors approved it last Friday.

Margalit is a former senior advisor in the office of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to NYSERDA.

In his new role, Margalit will work to help NYSERDA “optimize effectiveness and market responsiveness” as the authority seeks to “scale up” the state’s clean energy economy, the organization said.

Margalit’s expertise and leadership in building results-oriented organizations will be “extremely valuable” to the authority as it looks to become “even more impactful and responsive” to market developments, John Rhodes, president and CEO of NYSERDA, said in the news release.

“David’s leadership will be critical in supporting Gov. Cuomo’s initiatives that expand the state’s clean-energy sector and provide a cleaner, more affordable and more resilient energy system for all New Yorkers,” Rhodes said.

As a senior advisor in Mayor Bloomberg’s office, Margalit led New York City’s efforts to improve customer service and online services for businesses.  As deputy commissioner of the city’s department of small-business services, he led the development and delivery of services to help businesses start and expand; drove a turnaround of the city’s job and training services; and instituted improvements to customer service across several city agencies, NYSERDA said.

Prior to his position in Bloomberg’s office, Margalit was vice president of services at San Ramon, Calif.–based Accela, Inc., where he grew the company’s ability to implement technology that automates government services, NYSERDA said.

Additionally, he worked at Redwood City, Calif.–based Oracle Corporation (NYSE: ORCL) and has served as an adjunct professor at the Wagner School of Public Policy at New York University, the authority added.
