NYSERDA recognizes SUNYIT for its energy-efficiency efforts

MARCY — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has recognized the State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome (SUNYIT)  for its work in energy-cost reduction.

The agency has awarded the school a High Performance Building Plaque for energy-efficiency measures that will cut energy costs by $62,000 annually.

NYSERDA recognizes hospitals, colleges and universities, schools, businesses, and other organizations that construct or substantially renovate buildings that perform at least 30 percent above the New York energy code, the agency said in a news release.

SUNYIT’s Wildcat Field House is rated to perform 34 percent above the energy-code requirements.  The building achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification  from the U.S. Green Building Council.

SUNYIT was awarded $190,000 from NYSERDA, which helps to offset the cost of the energy-efficiency measures at the field house on its Marcy campus, the authority said in a news release.

The energy-efficiency improvements to the 58,000-square-foot facility include improved heating, ventilation and air conditioning; lighting and lighting controls; and energy efficient building shell, such as the walls, windows, and roof.

The electricity savings of 320,000 kilowatt hours is equivalent to the amount of electricity that 46 homes annually consume, and the school will generate the savings annually for years to come, according to NYSERDA.
