SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse–based engineering firm O’Brien & Gere has cut 27 jobs and closed its office in Louisville, Ky., citing “weak market conditions” in its public-sector business.

The company confirmed the layoffs following an email inquiry from the Business Journal News Network.

The layoffs included seven people from its headquarters in downtown Syracuse. Those layoffs occurred last week, the company said.

The workers in those positions served in technical, engineering, and support roles.

O’Brien & Gere said it is also working with a “partner firm” to “transition our projects and 20 local employees” in the Louisville office.

That office will remain open until the firm completes the transition, which it expects to happen by the end of the year.

Despite the layoffs, O’Brien & Gere calls 2014 a “positive year,” and its employment levels remain “consistent with past years.”

O’Brien & Gere employs about 900 people, about half of whom work in the Syracuse office and in its manufacturing and technology-development center in Clay.

The firm also notes it has 24 open positions to handle its areas of growth in the New York City area and the Mid-Atlantic states.
