SALINA, N.Y. — The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA), which oversees the county’s solid-waste and recycling programs, announced it has hired Dereth Glance as its new executive director.

Glance started in the role on Sept. 6, Kristen Lawton, public-information officer at OCRRA, said in response to a BJNN inquiry.

Glance succeeds Mark Donnelly, who resigned from his position at the beginning of May for personal reasons, Lawton confirmed to BJNN.

Don Lawless served as OCRRA’s acting executive director between May and early September following Donnelly’s departure, Lawton added.

Glance’s experience includes guiding regional and international organizations at program, leadership, board and executive levels, OCRRA said in a news release issued Thursday.

Glance already has “extensive knowledge” of OCRRA, having served on its board of directors for six years between 2004 and 2010.

Her time on the OCRRA board included several years of serving as vice chair and recycling-committee chair.

“Dereth brings leadership and historical knowledge of our agency, along with a profound commitment to our environment. She embodies the values, principles and practices at the heart of OCRRA’s mission, which is to provide our community with a comprehensive solid-waste management system that is environmentally, socially and financially sound,” Mike Reilly, chairman of the OCRRA board, said in the release.

About Glance
Glance most recently served as a U.S. commissioner at the International Joint Commission, charged with preventing and resolving disputes and promoting cooperation for the shared waters of the United States and Canada.

Prior to that, Glance was executive program director at the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, an environmental advocacy group. She directed water, energy and waste-reduction programs for five regional offices in New York and Connecticut.

Citizens Campaign for the Environment has a Central New York/Finger Lakes office at 2000 Teall Ave. in Salina, according to its website.

During her tenure there, she also served on New York’s Great Lakes Basin Advisory Council, the Clean Water Network, and the Onondaga Lake Partnership Outreach Committee, OCRRA said.

The Clean Water Network is a project of the Environment America Research & Policy Center, according to the Clean Water Network website. Environment America Research & Policy Center is a Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit organization, according to its website.

“My travels across North America confirmed that the passion and commitment to clean air and water, recycling and sustainable solid waste management in the Onondaga County community is truly something special. It is an honor to work side-by-side with the dedicated volunteer board of directors and OCRRA’s talented staff to meet the challenges ahead to continue to deliver award winning sustainable solid waste management to our community,” Glance said in the release.

OCRRA is a nonprofit, public-benefit corporation that the New York State Legislature created in 1990.
