Oncenter to host event in regional MWBE opportunities expo series

SYRACUSE — The Oncenter will host one of six sessions in the 2017 New York State regional minority and women-owned business enterprise (MWBE) opportunities expo series this June.

Empire State Development’s (ESD) division of minority and women’s business development will hold the Central New York event in the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center at Oncenter on June 22. A few weeks earlier, the North Country expo is scheduled for May 18 at the Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, and the Southern Tier event is set for June 1 in the Clemens Center in Elmira. Each expo begins at 8 a.m. ESD is New York’s primary economic-development agency.

The MWBE regional expos are designed to connect minority and women-owned businesses to New York State agencies, authorities, and prime contractors.

The events are a gathering of various state agencies and authorities that have a “significant” presence in each region to provide MWBE firms with local networking opportunities, according to the ESD website.

In addition to “providing the prospect of meeting procurement officers,” these events feature workshops and panel discussions to deliver important information about doing business with New York State government.

The expos are free of charge and will provide panel sessions and workshops on the regional economic-development council awards, regional contracting opportunities, and on becoming a New York State MWBE-certified firm.

They will also include a MWBE business builder boot camp, which involves local technical-assistance resources available for MWBE firms, the website says.

In addition, the expos will include a workshop focusing MWBE certification “made easy”; a workshop on conducting business with New York State; an overview of state financial programs; and “one-to-one” New York State MWBE certification analyst consultations, according to ESD.
