Oneida County reports 4 COVID deaths in last day, other data improves

UTICA, N.Y. — Oneida County on Monday reported that four county residents died from COVID-19 on Sunday.

That followed one death on Friday and none on Saturday, for a three-day weekend total of five deaths. That’s up from two COVID deaths over the prior three-day weekend.

The county’s coronavirus-test positivity rate was 4.8 percent, up from 4.2 percent a week ago.

Other COVID statistics for the county, however, have improved over the last week.

Oneida County reported 247 new virus cases over the latest three-day period, Friday through Sunday, down 19 percent from 304 cases in the comparable period a week ago.

Active cases fell more than 8 percent to 984 in Monday’s report from 1,075 active cases a week prior.

The number of county residents hospitalized with COVID-19 declined 20 percent to 51 in Monday’s report from 64 seven days earlier.

The county said 31 of the hospitalized people were unvaccinated, while the other 20 were vaccinated but still became sick. Twelve of the hospitalized are in intensive care (10 unvaccinated and 2 vaccinated).

Breaking out the hospitalizations by facility, 25 are at MVHS, 15 are at Rome Health, and 11 are in hospitals outside Oneida County.
