VERONA. N.Y. — Oneida Indian Nation late Monday morning announced that it will be temporarily closing its three casino properties — Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, Point Place Casino in the Bridgeport area, and Yellow Brick Road Casino in Chittenango — starting today at 5pm.

The announcement came just after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that all casinos, restaurants and bars, movie theaters, and gyms in the state are to shut down at 8 p.m. Monday night in attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The governor also urged Native American casinos in the state to close, but noted that he couldn’t force them to do so.

The Oneida Nation said it’s closing its casinos for public health and safety reasons, amid the coronavirus pandemic. It provided no timeline for reopening at this time.

“The well-being of our members, employees, guests and community at-large remains our highest priority which is why we have decided to temporarily close all of our casinos later today in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ray Halbritter, Oneida Indian Nation Representative and CEO of Nation Enterprises, said in a statement. “In this unprecedented time, it is critical for businesses to step up and make decisions to support the health and well-being of community.”

Over the weekend, the Oneida Nation announced that all full-time employees of its assortment of enterprises will get two additional weeks of coronavirus-related paid time off (PTO) “to help them deal with the unprecedented disruption.”

“This measure is designed to provide some degree of relief during the coming months when the financial impacts of the coronavirus are expected to be the most acute,” the Oneida Nation said.
