SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A woman in her 20s is the third confirmed case of coronavirus in Onondaga County, County Executive Ryan McMahon announced in his daily coronavirus briefing at midday on the county’s Facebook page.
McMahon came back three hours later to announce that three more people had tested positive for the virus, bringing the county’s case count to six.
The third case is considered a “traveler” from New York City, which has been “more of a hot zone at this point” for coronavirus cases, Onondaga County Health Commissioner Dr. Indu Gupta said in speaking in the initial briefing.
“She was working in New York City and her mother picked her up and drove her home,” McMahon added.
The patient is now recovering at home and doing well, Gupta said.
The Onondaga County Health Department investigates anybody with whom she has had contact, besides family members and friends. The department is also working with the New York State Department of Health in investigating the cases, Gupta noted.
The third case can serve as a public reminder, the health commissioner noted.
“The spread is happening. It is in our community. There’s no relationship with [the first two cases] … the couple which we announced [Monday],” said Gupta.
The first two confirmed cases are a woman in her 70s and her husband.
