Onondaga County receives two sales tax payments, still down $15 million in current budget

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon on Monday said the county received two sales-tax payments.

The first payment received Monday covered the month of May and the quarter of March to May. The payment totaled nearly $17.3 million and reflects a $6.9 million increase year over year.

The second payment covers the month of June. The payment totaled $11.2 million and reflects a $3.1 million dollar decrease year over year.

Onondaga County is now down more than $15 million in sales-tax revenue than what was budgeted for the 2020 spending plan.

“The two sales-tax payments received [Monday] illustrate the volatility and uncertainty in our economic recovery,” McMahon said. “This makes the fiscal challenges and budget consequences facing our county potentially devastating … It is also important to note that Onondaga County has also had to take on millions of dollars in new and unexpected costs in addition to potential cuts from New York State. We need our partners on the federal level to provide much needed financial assistance and certainty as soon as possible.”
