Onondaga County warns customers of Solvay meat market about potential coronavirus exposure

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Onondaga County officials are asking anyone who may have visited Ascioti’s Market in Solvay on the afternoon of St. Patrick’s Day to call the county health department and/or their doctor.

“If you visited Ascioti’s … Market [in Solvay] between 12:30 [p.m.] and 4 p.m. on Tuesday [March 17] St. Patrick’s Day, please contact our health department and/or your primary-care physician,” said Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon.

McMahon noted the county has a “gap” in a coronavirus investigation, and that’s why the county is looking for anyone who may have visited Ascioti’s that afternoon. Customers visiting the store during that time may have been exposed to the virus from an employee that worked then.

McMahon made the announcement during the Monday afternoon coronavirus briefing at the Oncenter.

Case count rises

Onondaga County now has 53 positive coronavirus cases, which is up from 45 on Sunday.

“Overall, we have 46 specific cases [and] seven contacts that are positive [cases] from quarantines,” said McMahon. “Just to remind the public again … When we put people in a quarantine, there’s a higher probability that they will test positive than someone who just shows up due to a doctor referral.”

Of the positive cases, 28 are female, 25 are male. The county says 22 of the 53 are under age 40. “That means 42 percent of our cases are under 40. That is a number that actually has increased from [Sunday]. I know one of the stereotypes often was that those under 40 (in their 30s and 20s) are invincible to this. Not the case,” McMahon said.

The patients include 12 in their 20s; seven people in their 30s; eight in their 40s; eight in their 50s; seven in their 60s; seven people in their 70s; and one person above age 80.

McMahon also broke down the cases by geographic location.
