Patent activity increases in Syracuse area

Patent applications and the number of patents issued in the Syracuse area rose in the second quarter to record high levels, according to an analysis from an Albany–based law firm.

Hoffman Warnick, LLC, which also has offices in Rochester and Boston, produces quarterly analyses of patent activity in the Tech Valley, Rochester, Boston, and Syracuse. For the second quarter, 168 patents were issued in Onondaga County, up from 139 in the previous quarter and 137 a year earlier, according to Hoffman Warnick.

Patent applications totaled 177 for the period, up from 124 in the first quarter and 145 in the second quarter of 2011.

“After dipping last quarter, we are pleased to see such a dramatic increase in both issuances and new applications,” Michael Hoffman, a partner at Hoffman Warnick, said in a news release. “This would appear to reflect the positive technology based activity occurring in the Syracuse region. Given the type of activity occurring at places like the Tech Garden, we expect to see the positive trend continue, which will hopefully lead to economic growth.”
