Patents issued increase, applications fall in Syracuse

SYRACUSE — The patent picture during the fourth quarter was mixed in the Syracuse area, according to new data from an Albany–based intellectual property law firm.

The number of patents issued in the Syracuse region rose to 164 from 143 in the third quarter and 118 in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to the quarterly Syracuse Patent Index from Hoffman Warnick, LLC. The number of patent applications fell during the period to 158 from 153 in the previous quarter and 173 a year earlier.

“The overall patent picture in Syracuse continues to remain relatively stable.” Michael Hoffman, a partner at Hoffman Warnick, said in a news release. “It’s sort of business as usual in the Syracuse area. The usual players continue to file and issue patents at a relatively constant rate. What we’re hoping to see is upward trend driven by startup and venture backed companies.”
