SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Central New York Bankruptcy Bar Association, Inc. (CNYBBA) has elected Neil Smith of the Syracuse law firm of Mackenzie Hughes, LLP to serve as association president.
Smith has been a member of the business department, with a focus on bankruptcy law, since joining Mackenzie Hughes in 2005, according to a news release from the firm.
Smith’s practice includes the representation of businesses in bankruptcy proceedings, debt reorganizations, and workouts.
He also represents defendants in preferential-transfer litigation and provides support to other attorneys and partners of the firm on the regulatory, lending, operational, and governance issues of banks and credit unions.
Smith is a member of the Onondaga, New York State, and American Bar Associations, according to the release.
Local bankruptcy attorneys formed the CNYBBA in 1991 after they “identified the need for bankruptcy-education programs and a forum for the exchange of ideas and the discussion of problems related to the practice of bankruptcy law,” according to the CNYBBA website.
The CNYBBA sponsors an annual bankruptcy-scholarship competition at the Syracuse University College of Law, the website says.
It also sends volunteers into area high schools as part of the C.A.R.E. (Credit Abuse Resistance Education) program, educating young people on the responsible use of credit.
