People news: Cherney joins St. Joseph’s Health Cardiovascular Institute

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — St. Joseph’s Health announced that Anton L. Cherney, a cardiothoracic surgeon, has joined its Cardiovascular Institute.

St. Joseph’s Health said in a news release that Cherney is an “expert in minimally invasive procedures” including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). His interests include surgery for coronary heart disease, heart valve and aortic surgery, vascular surgery, and surgery for lung cancer.

 Prior to joining St. Joseph’s Health, Dr. Cherney was a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon for Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario in Canada and completed his residency in general surgery through Queens University, also in Ontario, Canada. He completed post-graduate fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and advanced cardiac surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, also in Boston.

“Dr. Cherney brings a wealth of experience in Cardiothoracic surgery,” Dr. Joe Spinale, chief medical officer at St. Joseph’s Health, said in the release. “His background and interest in the advancement of the field through use of cutting-edge surgical procedures is an excellent fit for St. Joseph’s Cardiovascular Institute.”

St. Joseph’s Health Cardiovascular Institute offers cardiology, cardiac surgery, and vascular surgery services.
