People news: First Niagara names Dempsey corporate controller

BUFFALO, N.Y. — First Niagara Financial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: FNFG) announced it has named Brian M. Dempsey senior vice president and corporate controller.

Dempsey will report to Gregory W. Norwood, First Niagara’s chief financial officer. Dempsey will also serve as the company’s principal accounting officer, according to a company news release.

 

Dempsey previously was director of finance accounting and brings to his new position more than 15 years of leadership experience in corporate finance and public accounting. He joined the company in October 2009 as corporate reporting manager. Prior to First Niagara, Dempsey was a senior manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he worked for 10 years auditing various banks and financial-service companies.

Dempsey earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Canisius College and is a certified public accountant. 

Buffalo–based First Niagara is ranked fourth in deposit market share in the 16-county Central New York area with an 8.4 percent share of total deposits, according to the latest FDIC data.
