People news: MVCC names Coffey head coach of women’s basketball team

UTICA, N.Y. — Mohawk Valley Community College has recently appointed Gabrielle Coffey, of Utica, as women’s basketball head coach/athletic specialist.

She is responsible for recruiting and coaching student-athletes for the Hawks’ women’s basketball program, which is part of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III, Division III.

Coffey most recently served as director of school counseling and the varsity girls basketball coach at Notre Dame Schools in Utica. Coffey was the head women’s basketball coach at Herkimer County Community College from 2017-20, leading the team to the regional semifinals and earning them a top 10 national ranking for the 2019-20 season. Prior to her time at Herkimer, Coffey was assistant coach (2013-14) and head coach (2014-16) at Finger Lakes Community College, where she also worked as a specialist in the disability services and academic advisement departments. She also has served as the assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Rochester (2012-13) and the head coach for Hudson Valley Community College (2009-11).

Coffey played college basketball at both Siena College (2002-03) and SUNY Oneonta (2003-06). She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY Oneonta, a master’s degree in sport and exercise psychology from Ithaca College, and a master’s degree/certificate of advanced study in school counseling from SUNY Albany.
