People news: NBT Bank hires manager for Cortland offices

CORTLAND, N.Y. — NBT Bank (NASDAQ: NBTB) has hired George Spencer to manage its Cortland offices located on Groton Avenue and in the Cortlandville Walmart location.

NBT Bank announced the hiring in a news release distributed on Thursday.

In this role, Spencer is responsible for managing all branch-banking activities and business-development efforts for both locations.

He’ll also work with Jeff Armstrong, the retail-market manager and branch manager of the NBT’s Main Street office to “expand the bank’s presence in the community,” according to the news release.

Spencer has worked in the banking industry for 14 years, most recently serving as manager of the Horseheads office of Five Star Bank.

He has also managed the Horseheads office of HSBC Bank and the Whitney Point office of M&T Bank (NYSE: MTB).

Spencer is a graduate of SUNY Cortland, the company said.

“NBT Bank welcomes George as branch manager,” Thomas Sutton, NBT’s territory manager, said in the news release. “His banking industry and customer-service experience makes him an excellent resource for our customers.”

NBT Bank offers personal banking, asset management and business services through a network of over 155 locations in six states that include New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

NBT Bank and its parent company, NBT Bancorp, are headquartered in Norwich.

The banking company had assets of $7.8 billion as of December 31, 2014, the company said.
