People news: Shiel named director of code enforcement for City of Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has announced the appointment of Ryan Shiel as director of code enforcement in the city’s Department of Neighborhood and Business Development.

Shiel fills the role previously held by Jake Dishaw, who was appointed deputy commissioner of code enforcement and zoning administration back in October, the city’s office of communications tells CNYBJ in an email.

Shiel will be responsible for directing and managing the activities of the Division of Code Enforcement. Those activities include plan review and inspection of all residential, commercial, mixed-use, and industrial structures, along with any rehabilitation and demolition work within the city of Syracuse.

He will administer and enforce all rules, regulations, and codes to maintain the ‘quality and integrity’ of building structures. Shiel will also oversee enforcement procedures to bring properties into compliance upon identified violations, Walsh’s office said.

Shiel has worked for the City of Syracuse for more than 20 years in the Division of Code Enforcement and has been ‘instrumental’ in advancing the work of the division. In his most recent role as assistant director, Shiel assisted in the planning, organizing, and administering of residential and non-residential structure inspections and revitalization.

In his previous role as structural and new construction examiner, Shiel conducted inspections of buildings for safety and code violations.
