SYRACUSE, N.Y. — St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center has recently appointed Anthony Mina as executive operations officer for a unit it calls Acute Care Enterprise.

The hospital said in a news release that it created the position to support its “growing” physician practices.

Mina most recently served as executive director of Upstate Health Providers, P.C. at Upstate University Health System in Syracuse.

In the role, Mina “corporately, organizationally and financially” reengineered a captive PC (professional corporation) by “realigning and structuring the hospital-based services and freestanding owned or contracted ambulatory-medical practices,” St. Joseph’s said in the release.

A captive PC is “a mechanism for acquiring and managing practices. Although controlled by the hospital, it is frequently owned by a single doctor who is a hospital employee,” according to the website of Medscape from WebMD, an information provider geared toward health-care professionals.

Mina’s “knowledge of hospital operations and interdisciplinary patient care models will help us implement changes that will not only improve quality but also increase our revenue and reduce costs, thereby strengthening our ability to meet our mission,” Dr. Sandra Sulik, St. Joseph’s vice president for medical affairs, said in the news release.

Mina will work with Sulik to expand “revenue-cycle opportunities” for employed physicians through new practice models, and to improve clinical documentation and billing procedures, the hospital said.
