People news: Syracuse University appoints financial-aid director, chief of public safety

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse University has named Samantha Veeder as executive director of financial aid and appointed Robert Maldonado as chief of public safety.

Veeder will oversee daily operations in the office of financial aid and scholarship programs (OFASP), where her primary duties will include overseeing more than 35 full-time staff, the university said in a news release posted on its website.

She started her duties on Monday, July 6.

Veeder’s responsibilities also include the development of plans to “best utilize” institutional, state, and federal resources; and representing the OFASP and Syracuse University’s office of enrollment management on committees and task forces.

She has more than 20 years of financial-aid experience, including directorships at Nazareth, Hobart and William Smith, and Keuka colleges. She’s also served as a financial-aid consultant.

Syracuse University on June 12 also announced the appointment of Robert Maldonado as chief of public safety.

He’ll begin his new duties on July 27, the university said in a news release.

Maldonado comes to Syracuse University from Nazareth College in Rochester, where he’s served as the director of campus safety since 2006.

He’ll replace Anthony Callisto, who the university last December promoted to lead its new division of campus safety and emergency services.

Callisto is now serving as senior vice president for safety and chief law-enforcement officer.

Jill Lentz has been serving as the interim chief of public safety, according to the website for Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety.
